Job Description

AI subject matter expert advising Veterans Affairs on responsible AI governance, risk, and lifecycle management. Translating AI strategy into operational guidance for healthcare programs and leaders.

Responsibilities:

  • Advise VA leadership and program stakeholders on applying AI tools across clinical, administrative, and business healthcare operations
  • Develop and refine enterprise AI governance policies, standards, and playbooks aligned with VA directives, federal AI guidance, and responsible AI principles
  • Assess and communicate AI risks and mitigations involving bias, explainability, data privacy, model drift, and patient safety
  • Advise on AI product lifecycle management, including requirements, vendor evaluation, pilot design, performance monitoring, and decommissioning
  • Conduct landscape analyses and environmental scans of emerging AI technologies, vendors, and federal or industry best practices
  • Develop and deliver briefings, white papers, decision memos, and other written recommendations for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Collaborate with VA stakeholders, program offices, multidisciplinary teams, senior VA executives, and contracting officers

Requirements:

  • Hands-on experience developing, deploying, or applying AI/ML tools in an operational or enterprise setting
  • Healthcare operations experience strongly aligned with program needs
  • Experience supporting federal agency clients, healthcare organizations, or government-adjacent programs
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a VA Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential
  • Ability to pass a VA background investigation (Tier 1 / MBI or higher as required)
  • Ability to operate within VA network and data environments
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
  • Familiarity with AI risk frameworks such as NIST AI RMF and FDA AI/ML SaMD guidance
  • Knowledge of enterprise AI strategy and organizational change management for AI tool adoption
  • Equivalent professional experience, certifications, or demonstrated applied expertise accepted in lieu of a degree
  • Desired: AI governance or responsible AI experience within a federal health agency
  • Desired: Working knowledge of VA AI and data programs, including NAII and VHA Diffusion Ecosystem
  • Desired: Familiarity with HIPAA, 38 U.S.C., FDA SaMD, FAR/DFARS, and AI-related contract requirements
  • Desired: Experience facilitating organizational change management and stakeholder engagement
  • Desired: Experience procuring or evaluating AI vendor solutions in a federal acquisition context
