Job Description

Cancer Registrar documenting diagnoses, treatment, survival, and follow-up data for City of Hope’s nationwide cancer-care system. Supporting reporting, research, and quality assurance.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect data identifying patients with malignant diagnoses and document disease type, extent, treatment, and survival
  • Identify new malignant and reportable benign cases from pathology, cytology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, and new patient registration reports
  • Abstract core information from patients’ medical records
  • Enter data according to State of California mandatory reporting and ACoS reporting guidelines
  • Provide follow-up information to outside cancer registries and physicians
  • Assist clinicians, epidemiologists, and researchers with cancer-related data retrieval and research projects
  • Assist the supervisor in identifying problems for Cancer Committee or Quality Assurance Committee review
  • Maintain liaison with medical communities, allied health professionals, health organizations, professional societies, and cancer registries
  • Provide prolonged clinical patient follow-up to support quality care and determine patient outcomes
  • Ensure the quality of statistical data

Requirements:

  • High School or equivalent
  • Post High School Vocational/Specialized Training
  • 2 years in an allied health profession with at least 1 year as a Cancer Registrar, or completion of the Cancer Information Management program or equivalent
  • Current certification by the National Cancer Registrars Association, or procurement of CTR certification by passing the CTR exam within one year of employment
  • Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology
  • Working knowledge of basic statistics
  • Working knowledge of medical records operations
  • If completing the Cancer Information Management program or equivalent, must pass the CTR exam within one year of employment
