Job Description

Remote medical coder assigning ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes for Ochsner Health’s primary care, emergency, lab, and radiology services. Validating documentation and supporting compliant reimbursement.

Responsibilities:

  • Review and accurately code and abstract basic services, including outpatient diagnostic testing, Emergency Department, Lab, Radiology, Minor Primary Care services, and other less complex medical coding
  • Assign ICD-10, CPT, and/or HCPCS codes according to established coding guidelines, rules, and regulations
  • Perform professional coding for minor primary care, Urgent Care, and/or Emergency Department episodes
  • Review evaluation and management codes and CPT procedure codes
  • Perform facility charging for E&M levels, CPT procedures, and/or medication administration in Emergency Department/Observation units
  • Perform hospital coding for diagnoses and/or CPT procedure coding for emergency department, lab, radiology, and other diagnostic services
  • Review medical documentation and validate that it supports assigned codes
  • Communicate with providers to clarify documentation or request additional documentation
  • Collaborate with team members and departments to meet monthly departmental goals, including DNFB, Pre-AR, Denials, and Claim Edits
  • Research patient accounts in response to questions and/or errors
  • Meet department productivity and accuracy standards
  • Verify correct discharge disposition based on medical documentation
  • Remain knowledgeable about applicable laws, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Report known or suspected unethical conduct and compliance concerns as required

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 1 year of coding experience OR an AHIMA/AAPC certification
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and information retrieval
  • Proficiency with Windows-style applications, role-specific software packages, and keyboard
  • Ability to comply with applicable Medicare, Medicaid, third-party payer, federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements
