Job Description

Director of UX leading an embedded healthcare UX team for a technology firm serving the health insurance market. Managing designers and researchers while driving strategy, quality, and delivery.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide hands-on management, coaching, and mentorship to 2 UX researchers and 5 senior designers
  • Conduct design and research critique and ensure high-quality outputs across projects
  • Review and approve research and design plans
  • Lead performance development and team growth
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive team culture
  • Build and maintain relationships with Product and Engineering directors
  • Work with the VP of Product on roadmap planning and UX prioritization
  • Collaborate with the VP of User Experience on UX strategy and practice evolution
  • Represent UX in cross-functional planning and decision-making
  • Participate in quarterly business reviews with client leadership
  • Maintain systems providing leadership and clients visibility into team activity, assignments, and deliverables
  • Manage project tracking to provide visibility into workload and progress
  • Ensure consistent design quality across concurrent Care Management and Utilization Management projects
  • Optimize workflows to increase design throughput and reduce time-to-test and time-to-delivery
  • Navigate roadmap changes and ambiguity while maintaining team productivity
  • Facilitate weekly team meetings and twice-weekly critique sessions
  • Coach the team in product-management collaboration and remove blockers requiring senior intervention
  • Partner with Product across the product development lifecycle from discovery through design and build
  • Report to the VP of User Experience
  • Serve as operational owner of the embedded UX team for a healthcare technology client

Requirements:

  • 5+ years in UX leadership roles, including experience as a Director or equivalent
  • Proven experience managing teams of 5–10 UX professionals, including designers and researchers
  • Deep expertise in complex enterprise healthcare software
  • Health insurance/payer systems experience strongly preferred
  • Success in an in-house product organization or deeply embedded consulting role
  • Experience managing geographically distributed or offshore teams
  • Ability to build influential relationships with senior product and engineering leaders
  • Expertise in design critique and actionable feedback
  • Strong facilitation skills for cross-functional alignment
  • Process-oriented, with UX best-practice toolkits
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguous, fast-changing environments
  • Ability to coach UX professionals to grow their skills and impact
  • Experience in research oversight and translating insights into design direction
  • Proactive problem-solving and blocker removal
  • Collaborative leadership that builds trust and psychological safety
  • Results-driven focus on delivery and team wellbeing
  • Passion for healthcare and improving user experiences in complex domains
  • Must be US-based, ideally in the Eastern Time Zone
  • Boston area preferred
  • Some travel to Boston HQ or occasionally customer sites
