Job Description
Head of Survey Operations overseeing contractor-led UK marine surveys for Bedrock, an ocean-floor exploration company. Supporting vessel operations, crew certification, equipment logistics, and field readiness.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee active survey jobs carried out by Bedrock-trained contractor crews across the UK
- Serve as the primary escalation point during live operations, supporting go/no-go and abort/continue decisions
- Troubleshoot equipment and mission issues alongside contractor crews
- Directly perform equipment load-out, mission planning, deck operations, and demobilization when needed
- Support delivery of contractor training and certification courses
- Assess trainee readiness and reinforce course material with field experience
- Support onboarding of newly certified contractor crews and verify field readiness
- Assist with equipment movement, customs and carnets, vessel arrangements, spares, and logistics for UK and European jobs
- Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor fabrication or repair on survey equipment
- Provide status updates on active UK jobs to the wider Operations team and clients
- Maintain detailed daily activity records across crews under oversight
- Feed field issues, near-misses, and lessons learned into operations and training processes
- Promote continuous improvement of safety and quality management practices across UK operations
- Travel within the UK and occasionally elsewhere in Europe for jobs, training, and mobilizations
Requirements:
- Experience operating marine technologies directly related to Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), ideally with at-sea commercial experience beyond private vessel operation
- Experience leading, training, or supervising field crews or technicians in a maritime or offshore environment
- Ability to teach or mentor others
- Experience with hands-on survey work and remote oversight of crews
- Experience working with maritime contractors or vendors, ideally within the United Kingdom and/or European market
- Troubleshooting capability on marine survey equipment, including remotely guiding crews through fixes
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to assess crew performance and job readiness against a defined standard
- Based in, or willing to relocate to, the United Kingdom
- Right to work in the United Kingdom without a visa or work permit
- Ability to travel regularly for survey operations, including nights away from home
- Ability to build and implement processes from the ground up
- Ability to make decisions in imperfect scenarios and assess time-critical tradeoffs
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods on a vessel, sit at a desk, and work on a computer
- Ability to work outdoors in weather conditions on a vessel
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds at times
- Ability to obtain and maintain the medical fitness certification required for UK offshore survey work, commonly an ENG1 seafarer medical certificate or equivalent
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, with travel up to 80%
