Job Description
Junior Designer creating commercial fiction book covers for Penguin Random House’s Berkley team. Supporting Art Directors from concept through design, prepress, and production.
Responsibilities:
- Support Art Director(s) throughout all stages of book cover creation, from conception through design and pre-press
- Create book covers for a variety of bestselling commercial fiction titles
- Manage and design multiple front covers and mechanicals
- Assist supervising Art Director(s) with research, layouts, and presentations
- Coordinate with editors, copy editors, production, and prepress departments
- Prepare print-ready digital files
- Maintain high production standards
- Meet deadlines and stay within budgets
- Respond thoughtfully to feedback
Requirements:
- Strong layout and typography skills
- Proficiency with the MAC environment and Adobe Suite: Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator
- Passion for book design, typography, color, and trends
- Very strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
- Ability to prioritize and multitask and do timely follow-ups in a deadline-driven environment
- Highly creative thinker willing to explore multiple visual possibilities for each book cover
- Problem-solving ability
- Highly organized and flexible
- Excellent verbal and written interpersonal and communication skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Minimum of 6 months’ prior design experience
- Hand lettering and illustration skills are a plus
- Knowledge of printing, prepress file/art management, and production are a plus
- Resume and cover letter required for consideration
- Must be based in the United States and able to work primarily on Eastern Time for remote work
