Job Description
PHP Developer building AI-first PHP backend features for Cleeng’s subscriber retention and subscription-management platform. Designing REST APIs, modernizing legacy systems, and improving AI-assisted engineering workflows.
Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain backend features in the Core Platform using PHP 8.4, Laminas Mezzio, Doctrine, and MySQL
- Expose backend functionality through well-designed REST APIs
- Use AI coding agents daily for implementation, test generation, refactoring, and navigating the legacy codebase
- Improve documentation, conventions, tests, tooling, MCP servers, and agent instructions to increase team productivity
- Own correctness, design quality, and security of merged code
- Launch features with dashboards and alerts, monitor them, and participate in operational health
- Use AI to accelerate incident triage, log analysis, and root-cause investigations
- Modernize the platform through incremental refactoring and removal of legacy components
- Investigate and resolve bugs and escalations
- Collaborate with QA on shift-left, AI-assisted test automation
- Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and PHP Guild alignment
- Share AI workflows, prompts, and lessons learned across squads in a remote-first international team
Requirements:
- AI-first engineering practice: daily, fluent use of AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor), including effective prompting and critical review of generated code
- Proficient usage of modern PHP (8.x) with strong OOP and SOLID design judgement
- Ability to independently deliver in a mainstream PHP framework with Doctrine or another ORM
- MySQL query optimisation
- Experience with REST API design and consumption
- Automated testing in PHPUnit and a TDD mindset
- Confidence navigating and incrementally refactoring large legacy codebases, increasingly with AI assistance
- Ownership of features from ticket to production with a quality and reliability mindset
- Clear written communication and autonomy in a remote-first, agile team
