Job Description
Senior accountant improving Flagstar Bank’s accounting processes, controls, and technology. Leading automation, reconciliations, risk mitigation, and cross-functional projects.
Responsibilities:
- Identify inefficiencies and opportunities to enhance accounting processes and technology by analyzing bottlenecks, recurring errors, and stakeholder feedback
- Investigate improvement opportunities, identify root causes, and support practical, scalable solutions
- Partner with accounting and other business units to implement solutions and best practices
- Incorporate technology, leverage systems, and create automation where possible
- Collaborate on process-related initiatives and facilitate cross-departmental communication
- Lead and support project management initiatives, tracking personnel, dependencies, deliverables, timelines, and measurable efficiency gains
- Report progress and escalate issues to management
- Maintain documentation of new or modified processes
- Lead or assist with complex technical special projects and ad hoc departmental needs
- Design and build automated reconciliations in Blackline
- Complete required compliance training and maintain compliance with applicable laws and regulations
Requirements:
- Undergraduate Degree (4 years or equivalent) in Accounting required; Technology focus preferred
- 6+ years of accounting experience required
- 2 years of public accounting experience required
- Master's Degree or postgraduate equivalent in Accounting or Finance preferred
- CPA license preferred
- Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to master new technology quickly and effectively
- Deep understanding of accounting processes, internal controls over financial reporting, and risk identification and mitigation
- Pragmatic problem-solving skills
- Ability to multitask, work under pressure, and meet deadlines
- Strong attention to detail
- Strong experience with Microsoft Excel
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and practices
- Alteryx and Blackline auto-matching system experience preferred
