Job Description

Senior backend engineer building Ruby on Rails and Go services for PrizePicks’ daily fantasy sports platform. Supporting microservices migration, internal operational APIs, reliability, and engineering mentorship.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement backend features across Rails-based services and Go microservices, from API contracts through deployment and monitoring
  • Help decompose the Rails monolith into independently deployable services and contribute to extraction and architecture decisions
  • Build and maintain backend APIs for projection management, risk dashboards, alerting, and member operations
  • Lead complex feature design and implementation from product requirements through production deployment
  • Diagnose performance bottlenecks, optimize database queries, and improve backend resilience under load
  • Propose and drive service architecture decisions, evaluate tradeoffs, and communicate recommendations
  • Mentor Software Engineers I, II, and III through code reviews, pairing, and technical guidance
  • Improve team practices for code quality, testing, observability, and deployment
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, QA, and engineering teams to translate operational goals into technical solutions
  • Participate in the on-call rotation, contribute to root cause analysis, and improve long-term reliability

Requirements:

  • 5–8 years of professional software engineering experience with meaningful production experience in both Ruby on Rails and Go
  • Proven record owning and delivering complex, multi-component features in a team environment
  • Experience with monolith-to-microservices migrations, service extraction, dual-write patterns, and backward compatibility
  • Experience designing and operating distributed systems or event-driven architectures
  • Strong Rails proficiency and idiomatic Ruby development
  • Strong Go proficiency and production-quality, well-tested Go development
  • PostgreSQL skills including schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning
  • Understanding of REST and/or gRPC API design and service boundary design
  • Experience with asynchronous workflows, background job processing such as Sidekiq, message queues, or event streaming
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation
  • Understanding of observability practices including logging, metrics, and tracing
  • Comfortable working autonomously on ambiguous problems
  • Able to communicate technical decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Able to context-switch between deep technical work and collaborative planning
  • Experience working in a fully remote engineering organization
  • Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.; employment visa sponsorship is unavailable

Benefits:

  • Company-subsidized medical, dental, & vision plans
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Annual bonus
  • Flexible PTO to encourage a healthy work/life balance (2 weeks STRONGLY encouraged!)
  • Generous paid leave programs, including 16-week paid parental leave and disability benefits
  • Workplace flexibility and modern work schedules focused on getting the job done, not hours clocked
  • Company-wide in-person events and team outings
  • Lifestyle enhancement program
  • Company equipment provided (Windows & Mac options)
  • Annual performance reviews with opportunities for growth and career development
