Job Description
Senior Backend Engineer building APIs and backend services for fintech company Watu. Collaborating in Agile squads to enhance financial accessibility in Africa with strong Java skills.
Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs
- Write unit and integration tests as a first-class part of development
- Drive architecture discussions
- Review pull requests for design and maintainability
- Write and maintain technical documentation
- Contribute to shared libraries and platform standards
- Use AI/LLM tooling actively in your workflow
Requirements:
- 5+ years of professional backend software engineering experience
- At least 3 years working in Java in a production environment
- Java and Spring Boot depth
- REST API design
- Relational database design
- Distributed systems depth
- Testing with JUnit/Mockito and integration tests
- Event-driven architecture in production - Kafka or equivalent
- Microservices architecture experience
- Familiarity with cloud environments - AWS preferred
- Experience with any additional JVM language (Kotlin) or willingness to learn
