Job Description

Senior Data Engineer building scalable data infrastructure for Atom Learning’s personalised education products. Developing pipelines, models and predictive learning features used by students, teachers and schools.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and evolve data foundations behind customer-facing products, including predictive features, adaptive learning and assessment insights
  • Design, develop and improve reliable, scalable data pipelines and models
  • Shape the technical direction of the data platform
  • Improve data movement between the application, warehouse and product surfaces
  • Build clean, well-tested and reusable solutions using Python, SQL and dbt
  • Improve data quality, observability and reliability
  • Work with product, engineering, commercial and education teams to understand problems, shape solutions and measure impact
  • Create models, tooling and patterns that enable safe self-service data use
  • Use AI tools and agents to research, prototype and investigate solutions
  • Contribute to product features, APIs, internal tools or automation when appropriate
  • Review code, share expertise and raise data engineering standards
  • Mentor engineers and develop data capability across the engineering team

Requirements:

  • Significant experience designing, building, maintaining and scaling production data pipelines and platforms
  • Strong Python and SQL skills
  • Clear, maintainable and well-tested code
  • Understanding of data modelling and database architecture
  • Experience with cloud data warehouses, orchestration tools and transformation frameworks
  • End-to-end ownership from discovery through implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement
  • Ability to turn ambiguous requirements into practical, scalable solutions
  • Clear communication with technical and non-technical colleagues
  • Confident use of AI tools and agents
  • Experience with BigQuery, Airflow and dbt, or equivalent modern data technologies
  • Experience with CockroachDB, Postgres or other distributed/relational databases, including CDC or event-driven data pipelines
  • Knowledge of data visualisation, preferably Tableau or Metabase
  • Experience making data safely self-service through internal tooling, analytics platforms or LLM-powered interfaces
  • Experience supporting product analytics or building data-powered product features
