Job Description
Senior Python Engineer building FastAPI services and retrieval workflows for DeweyLearn, an education technology startup. Developing AI systems that capture expert judgment for authentic assessment.
Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain production backend services and APIs in Python using FastAPI
- Implement retrieval workflows including RAG, embeddings, and vector search
- Work closely with engineers and stakeholders to make sound technical trade-offs
- Help keep systems clean, reliable, and easy to extend
- Debug and assess AI-generated code critically
- Explain technical trade-offs and collaborate with stakeholders and team members
Requirements:
- 4–8 years of professional software engineering experience
- Proven software engineering fundamentals and ability to build reliable, maintainable systems
- Experience working with ML/AI systems in a production environment
- Native/fluent proficiency in English
- Ability to work agentically with AI as a primary authoring tool
- Ability to critically evaluate and debug AI-generated code
- Legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship, now and in the future
- Physically located in the United States while working
- Eastern time zone strongly preferred, with at least six hours of daily overlap with 9:00–17:00 ET
- Exceptional command of Python
- Exceptional command of FastAPI and related topics
- Production API experience backed by PostgreSQL
- Good command of Docker in development and deployment
- Exceptional understanding of version control, CI/CD, environments, and debugging
- Familiarity with retrieval workflows (RAG) and embedding-based search
- Experience in early-stage startups is a plus
- Understanding of infrastructure as code is a plus
- Experience with Natural Language Processing is a plus
- Familiarity with at least one front-end framework is a plus
