Job Description
Senior backend developer building JetBrains entitlement and metering services. Designing JVM systems that accurately support customer quotas, usage tracking, and billing.
Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and operate backend services determining customer entitlements and usage costs
- Own end-to-end flows from licensing and purchase data ingestion through quota enforcement and consumption recording
- Evolve domain models for seat-based and usage-based commercial plans
- Design external integrations using idempotency, ordering, reconciliation, and eventual consistency
- Plan and execute live data migrations with feature flags, dual writes, backfills, and verification
- Define invariants, metrics, and alerts for system observability
- Design versioned, backward-compatible internal APIs
- Improve performance and reliability under continuous production load
- Decommission legacy subsystems
- Write integration tests against real dependencies and maintain test infrastructure
- Investigate production incidents, identify root causes, and implement lasting fixes
- Build a reliable entitlement and metering foundation supporting new billing models without downtime or data divergence
Requirements:
- Proven track record building and operating backend services on the JVM using Kotlin or Java
- Solid knowledge of relational databases, including transactions, isolation levels, locking, indexing, and live schema migrations; PostgreSQL preferred
- Deep understanding of distributed systems patterns, including idempotency, retry strategies, eventual consistency, and data reconciliation
- Practical experience with live data migrations or system changes without downtime using feature flags and staged rollouts
- Experience designing versioned, backward-compatible APIs
- Hands-on experience with event-driven architectures and message brokers such as Kafka
- Ability to diagnose, debug, and resolve production incidents in complex environments
- Proficiency in written and spoken English
- Dedication to accuracy in domains with direct financial impact
- Pragmatic judgment when designing distributed systems
- Experience using metrics, traces, and logs to understand production behavior
- Comfort navigating and simplifying large existing codebases with legacy decisions
- Clear, direct communication skills for agreeing on API contracts
- Testing-focused engineering approach
