Job Description

Fullstack engineer building Toast’s new hospitality technology venture across backend, web, and Android. Shipping 0→1 products for food and beverage businesses with AI-enhanced development.

Responsibilities:

  • Build end-to-end across backend services, APIs, data models, web front ends, and Android point-of-sale and handheld apps
  • Learn unfamiliar platforms and codebases quickly, including Android/Kotlin
  • Understand operator needs and contribute product perspectives
  • Collaborate with a small cross-functional team to put products in customers’ hands quickly
  • Navigate diverse codebases across the Toast platform and deliver high-quality code on schedule
  • Own testing, instrumentation, on-call, and cleanup
  • Use AI tools to improve development workflow and velocity and pioneer new approaches

Requirements:

  • Track record of shipping meaningful products to real users with technical and business impact
  • Fullstack experience owning features from backend service and API through to the client
  • Backend fundamentals in Java, Kotlin, or similar
  • Knowledge of distributed systems, asynchronous communication, event-driven architecture, API design, and integration patterns
  • Modern web front-end development experience with React or similar
  • Track record of learning new languages, frameworks, or platforms on the job and shipping production code
  • Ability to deliver clean, maintainable, resilient code
  • Experience in 0→1 builds and comfort with shifting priorities and incomplete requirements
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to write technical designs and align with product and design partners
  • Pattern of using AI tools to accelerate work and explain their use
  • Android development experience, particularly production Kotlin or Java, is a nice to have
  • Early-stage product, internal incubation, or rapid experimentation experience is a nice to have
  • Point-of-sale, payments, hardware-adjacent, or offline-first systems experience is a nice to have
