Job Description
Senior Software Engineer modernizing healthcare EDI, interoperability, and FHIR systems for BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. Supporting secure applications, automation, and cloud infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
- Support and modernize EDI, interoperability, and FHIR capabilities across batch and real-time processing
- Ensure underlying applications and servers remain reliable and secure
- Solve complex production challenges and improve systems through automation
- Work across on-premises, OpenShift, and cloud environments
- Formulate and define system scope and objectives through research and fact-finding
- Design, develop, modify, or integrate complex information systems
- Optimize application systems and procedures for capacity, operating time, response time, and desired results
- Design, code, test, debug, and document programs, subroutines, and scripts
- Develop and implement program/system test plans and data verification methods
- Respond to system failures and performance events to reduce downtime and prevent recurrence
- Research software and hardware products to support recommendations, budgeting, and purchasing
- Act as an expert technical resource to development staff throughout development and implementation
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience required
- Equivalent years of experience: one year of technical experience for every year of college requested
- 1 year of experience with information technology concepts, application development methodology, terminology, and standards
- 5 years of systems and programming experience
- 1 year of expert working knowledge of at least one programming language in use at BCBST
- Enterprise application and Windows Server support experience
- Advanced SQL Server skills
- Hands-on scripting and automation experience
- Understanding of FHIR standards
- Experience with healthcare data and/or EDI
- Ability to troubleshoot complex platform and data-processing issues and address system vulnerabilities and health
- Experience with PowerShell and AIX Korn shell
- Preferred: Ansible Automation Platform, including playbooks, vaults, configuration management, and CI/CD integration
- Preferred: Working knowledge of Java and related technologies
- Preferred: Familiarity with Microsoft Azure, DevOps, OpenShift, REST, SOAP, and Web Services
- Ability to participate in a regular on-call rotation

- Proven IT, analysis, design, and coding skills
- Demonstrated success leading large and complex projects
- Top-level technical experience in applications systems analysis and programming
- Ability to interpret and translate technical or complex concepts for technical and business personnel
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical coworkers
