Job Description
Senior Staff Data Engineer shaping distributed data systems for SmithRx’s pharmacy benefits platform. Driving data strategy, governance, quality, and engineering-wide technical excellence.
Responsibilities:
- Define the long-term data engineering strategy aligned with company priorities and engineering best practices
- Design coherent architectures across multiple pipelines and API boundaries
- Simplify infrastructure and reduce maintenance costs
- Make high-impact build-versus-buy and framework-selection decisions
- Review designs to identify and resolve technical risks
- Improve developer efficiency and establish engineering-wide quality practices
- Roll out major features and systems with monitoring, failure-domain characterization, and success metrics
- Identify group-wide opportunities aligned with business strategy
- Refocus team efforts when projects are off-course or not producing business impact
- Enforce PII/PHI protection, security, compliance, data governance, and data quality principles
- Influence other teams' roadmaps and lead cross-functional decision-making
- Mentor and coach engineers
- Present technical strategies and business cases to executives
- Break down silos and drive adoption of new technologies and processes
Requirements:
- 8+ years of industrial experience in data engineering with an advanced degree, or 12+ years with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- Start-up and healthcare experience is highly desirable
- Mastery of data modeling concepts, database design principles, and data warehouse technologies such as Snowflake through production-grade implementations
- Strong skills in PySpark, SQL, and Python
- Hands-on experience with ETL tools and frameworks such as Apache Spark, Apache Airflow, dbt, Looker, and Superset
- In-depth experience managing the entire data lifecycle
- Direct responsibility for developing, implementing, and production-releasing complex data processing solutions utilizing distributed systems
- Experience with modern object-oriented or compiled languages such as C#, C++, Go, Java, or Scala is a plus
- Proven track record of organization-wide engineering decision-making in ambiguous environments
