Job Description
Software Engineer building payment, accounting, and card infrastructure at Griffin, a regulated UK bank. Owning architecture, delivery, and production systems end-to-end.
Responsibilities:
- Join a small, cross-functional engineering team owning a product area end-to-end
- Explore multiple technical solutions through RFCs, proof-of-concepts, and experiments
- Write maintainable, observable, and scalable software
- Build card issuing, Faster Payments, cross-border payments, and term deposit account capabilities
- Develop reconciliation systems processing millions of FPS transactions
- Implement double-entry accounting for card spending and settlements
- Design webhook infrastructure with message signing and replay protection
- Build API versioning and payment approval workflows
- Own technical decisions, architecture, and choices between extending or rebuilding systems
- Deliver features from customer problem definition through production
- Shape technical direction through code reviews, implementation patterns, and architectural decisions
- Monitor, debug, and improve production systems
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers
- Improve engineering practices and productivity
Requirements:
- Production experience with Clojure, Elixir, Erlang, Haskell, Scala, or Scheme, or substantial personal projects demonstrating deep functional programming experience
- Fintech domain expertise in payments, accounts, ledgers, or compliance
- Strong software fundamentals
- Distributed systems knowledge, including consistency models, idempotency, and production failure modes
- Experience working in product-focused, collaborative teams alongside PMs and designers
- Comfort with startup pace, ambiguity, shifting priorities, and evolving requirements
- Successful completion of background screening, including right-to-work, criminal record, credit history, social media, and professional reference checks
- Right to work in the UK or requirement to address UK work sponsorship
