Job Description
Staff Engineer building Redcare Pharmacy’s Java-based headless checkout platform for Redcare Pharmacy, Europe’s leading e-pharmacy. Shaping APIs, architecture and foundations for agentic commerce.
Responsibilities:
- Build and evolve the Core Commerce Services platform
- Create scalable, channel-independent checkout capabilities from technical discovery and design through implementation and production
- Define APIs, domain boundaries and integration patterns
- Make pragmatic decisions regarding scalability, reliability, security, observability and long-term maintainability
- Align technical decisions and integration contracts across Checkout, Payment and dependent teams
- Maintain clear ownership boundaries
- Mentor engineers through pairing, design discussions, code reviews and technical feedback
- Raise engineering standards across the team
- Partner with Product to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions
- Establish foundations for AI-powered assistants, agentic commerce and emerging channels
Requirements:
- Strong Java and backend engineering expertise
- Experience designing and building backend services, platforms and large-scale distributed systems
- Hands-on contribution to production code
- Staff/Principal-level experience or equivalent senior technical leadership
- Strong system design and architecture capabilities
- Ability to take significant technical ownership with a high level of autonomy
- Comfort working in a greenfield / 0-to-1 environment
- Ability to explore options, evaluate trade-offs and make pragmatic technical decisions
- Strong track record of mentoring engineers and leading through influence
- Ability to create alignment across engineering domains
- Experience with headless or traditional checkout, order management, SaaS/platform engineering, e-commerce or marketplaces is a valuable plus, not a requirement
