Job Description
Staff Software Engineer building scalable catering and events software for Toast, a restaurant technology company. Leading architecture, technical strategy, and AI-enabled engineering innovation across complex distributed systems.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and delivery of complex, high-impact initiatives spanning multiple teams and systems from concept through production
- Own and evolve critical-system architecture for scalability, reliability, and maintainability
- Drive technical strategy, simplify systems, reduce complexity, and improve engineering velocity
- Partner with Product, Design, and cross-functional stakeholders to shape ambiguous problems into actionable solutions with measurable customer impact
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship through guidance, design reviews, and hands-on collaboration
- Establish and promote best practices for code quality, testing, observability, and operational excellence
- Identify and address system-wide risks, performance bottlenecks, and scaling challenges
- Champion AI and emerging technologies to improve developer productivity and drive organizational innovation
Requirements:
- Proven experience leading the design and delivery of large-scale distributed systems in production
- Strong backend expertise, preferably in Java or Kotlin, with ability to contribute across the full stack
- Ability to design scalable architectures and make technical tradeoffs across systems and teams
- Experience navigating ambiguity and aligning stakeholders
- Technical leadership experience, including mentoring engineers and influencing engineering standards
- Deep understanding of microservices architecture, system design, performance, reliability, and observability
- Ability to decompose complex problems into strategies and guide execution
- Strong product and customer mindset with a history of delivering user and business impact
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Experience using AI-based tools or platforms to improve engineering effectiveness or enable product capabilities
