Job Description

Deal Desk Manager evaluating complex mortgage scenarios and underwriting exceptions for a lending company. Advising teams on risk, guidelines, and viable approval structures.

Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze complex loan scenarios to determine eligibility, structure, and potential paths to approval
  • Evaluate underwriting exception and guideline variance requests, assessing risk and business impact
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on company, agency, investor, and regulatory guidelines
  • Partner with Sales, Account Management, Underwriting, and Operations teams on challenging loan transactions
  • Research and interpret underwriting guidelines to support decisions and consistency
  • Identify compensating factors and alternative structuring opportunities
  • Escalate high-risk or precedent-setting scenarios to senior credit leadership with recommendations
  • Communicate guideline interpretations and risk assessments to internal stakeholders
  • Monitor exception trends and recommend process, policy, and training improvements
  • Participate in quality control initiatives
  • Maintain knowledge of agency, investor, regulatory, and market guideline changes
  • Assist with special projects, product implementations, and guideline rollouts

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 5+ years of mortgage underwriting experience with expertise in agency, government, non-QM, and investor guidelines
  • 2+ years of experience evaluating complex loan scenarios, exception requests, or escalated credit-risk decisions
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex guidelines while exercising sound judgment in ambiguous situations
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Reliable internet connection and quiet, professional workspace
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field preferred
  • DE, SAR, LAPP/SAR, or other advanced mortgage underwriting certifications preferred
  • Experience in Deal Desk, Credit Policy, Credit Risk, Underwriting Support, or guideline exception review preferred
  • Experience with Correspondent and Wholesale mortgage channels preferred
  • Prior leadership, mentoring, or team management experience preferred
  • Experience partnering with Sales, Underwriting, and Operations teams preferred
  • Knowledge of investor relations, product development, and mortgage credit policy implementation preferred
  • Experience analyzing exception trends and recommending process improvements, policy enhancements, or training initiatives preferred
  • Strong presentation and stakeholder management skills preferred
