Job Description

Fraud Analyst investigating secured-lending fraud for Upstart’s AI lending marketplace. Analyzing typologies, preparing SAR referrals, and strengthening fraud controls across lending operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Own first-line fraud detection and investigation across assigned secured lending product lines
  • Investigate suspicious activity and fraud indicators across application, origination, and servicing
  • Investigate application, identity, income/employment, collateral, occupancy, valuation, loan stacking, and dealer-related fraud typologies
  • Prepare fraud escalation and SAR referral packages documenting facts, evidence, typology, and recommendations
  • Conduct early payment default fraud file reviews for loans reaching 60+ days past due within 90 days of origination
  • Monitor and analyze fraud trends across origination channels, dealers, geographies, synthetic identity patterns, and channel-level risk signals
  • Produce fraud metrics and trend reporting
  • Maintain Auto dealer fraud scorecards and channel-level fraud indicator tracking, including pattern-based referrals and dealer suspension triggers
  • Triage fraud-related alerts from the QC Engine and provide feedback to improve detection rules and origination controls
  • Coordinate with Operations, Compliance, Legal, and Risk on fraud controls, law enforcement information requests, and regulatory response support
  • Identify regulatory fraud risks and support compliance with applicable OCC, FFIEC, BSA/AML, Red Flags Rule, and product-specific requirements
  • Maintain audit-ready investigation records, typology documentation, and program evidence for examinations

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience in fraud investigation, fraud analytics, or financial crimes within consumer lending, banking, or a regulated financial institution
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience investigating consumer lending fraud, including application, identity, income/employment, and collateral fraud
  • Experience preparing fraud investigation case documentation, evidence assemblies, typology analyses, and written escalation packages
  • Familiarity with SAR referral processes and 12 CFR 21.11 SAR thresholds and timelines
  • Working knowledge of BSA/AML requirements applicable to consumer lending, including CIP/CDD, OFAC screening, suspicious activity monitoring, and Red Flags Rule obligations
  • Working knowledge of OCC enterprise fraud risk management and FFIEC BSA/AML Manual requirements
  • Experience with fraud trend analysis, application fraud-rate monitoring, typology identification, and channel/geographic concentration analysis
  • Ability to manage workload, meet deadlines, and proactively communicate risk with minimal supervision
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with Operations, Compliance, Legal, and Risk
  • Preferred: dealer-channel fraud investigation experience, including power booking, ghost down payments, straw purchases, VIN cloning, title washing, and F&I product abuse
  • Preferred: dealer-level fraud scorecards and monitoring or suspension workflows
  • Preferred: collateral fraud investigation in home equity lending
  • Preferred: CIP/CDD execution and fraud red flags in account draw activity and maintenance
  • Preferred: fraud indicators across income, identity, appraisal, and title documentation
  • Preferred: Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) designation or progress toward certification
  • Preferred: fraud metrics reporting to management committees
  • Preferred: EPD review processes and OCC fraud loss classification requirements
  • Preferred: translating investigation findings into examination-ready documentation
  • Preferred: collaboration across fraud, compliance, legal, and quality control functions in fintech
