Job Description
Intermediate Software Engineer building Unreal Engine 5 gameplay and engine systems for Blackbird Interactive, an independent game studio. Implementing core mechanics, networking, UI support, optimization, and stability improvements.
Responsibilities:
- Build gameplay and engine systems for a new original game developed in Unreal Engine 5
- Design and implement player-facing systems including movement, traversal, interactions, and progression using C++ and Blueprints
- Create modular, data-driven gameplay systems supporting rapid iteration and multiple platforms
- Collaborate with design, animation, and audio teams to prototype mechanics, tune gameplay feel, and refine experiences through playtesting
- Profile and optimize gameplay systems to meet performance and memory budgets
- Contribute to stability through testing and debugging
- Share gameplay engineering best practices through code reviews and informal mentorship of associate engineers
- Stay current with UE5 subsystems including GAS, MassEntity, and Chaos
- Propose tooling and workflow improvements and support internal knowledge sharing
Requirements:
- 3+ years of professional experience using C++ in Unreal Engine 4 or 5, focused on gameplay systems
- BSc in Computer Science or a college diploma in software engineering, game programming, or a closely related field
- At least one shipped commercial game featuring the candidate's gameplay contributions
- Passion for prototyping, polish, and tight player control and feedback loops
- Clear communication and cross-functional collaboration
- Comfort with Perforce, Git, or similar version control systems
- Familiarity with modern profiling and debugging tools
- Legal eligibility to work in Canada and residence within Canada
- Pacific-time overlap required
