Job Description
Lead Java engineer guiding New Relic’s observability data ingestion platform. Owning distributed-systems architecture, production code, reliability, and engineering mentorship at massive scale.
Responsibilities:
- Set technical direction for the Data Platform ingest team
- Own architecture and design decisions for high-throughput distributed systems
- Lead engineers through resolving complex problems
- Coach and grow engineers through code review, technical feedback, and career mentorship
- Work with product and partner teams to translate roadmap priorities into technical plans
- Represent the team’s technical point of view and contribute to shared standards and resources
- Weigh performance, maintainability, and operational cost tradeoffs for ingest systems
- Scope, estimate, and own complex multi-engineer projects from design to general availability
- Evaluate and introduce tools, patterns, technologies, and suitable LLM-assisted development practices
- Write and ship production code regularly
- Communicate technical risks and tradeoffs to stakeholders
- Own operational health, including CI/CD, observability, and incident response
- Identify and close gaps in tools, documentation, and team coverage
- Develop and operate Kubernetes-managed Java services using Kafka and a cell-based architecture processing millions of messages per second and petabytes of data
Requirements:
- 7–10 years of professional software engineering experience, including 2+ years leading or acting as a technical lead for a team or major initiative
- Deep fluency in Java or a comparable OOP language, with ability to ramp quickly across other languages and frameworks
- Experience running stateful distributed services in production under unpredictable load
- Experience debugging complex failure states and captaining incident remediation efforts
- Experience leading architecture and design reviews for complex systems
- Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD tooling such as Argo CD
- Hands-on experience with event-driven architectures such as Kafka
- Hands-on experience with container orchestration such as Kubernetes
- Experience with data modeling and query optimization against relational databases at scale
- Track record of mentoring engineers and giving feedback that improves team output
- Strong written and verbal communication, including ability to make a technical case to non-technical stakeholders
