Job Description
Principal backend engineer shaping Zillow’s real estate technology platforms. Defining cloud architecture, APIs, distributed systems, and technical strategy across multiple teams.
Responsibilities:
- Support five engineering teams and partners in Product and Data Science on technical and strategic matters
- Serve as primary technical steward of the Post-Connect backend domain
- Define and drive long-term technical strategy and architecture for backend platforms and services
- Lead design and implementation of high-throughput, low-latency APIs, data and event pipelines, and platform capabilities
- Solve complex technical problems and make high-impact design decisions
- Prototype tools, patterns, and processes to de-risk ambiguous initiatives
- Partner with product, data, and machine learning leaders to translate business goals into technical roadmaps
- Mentor and coach senior engineers and tech leads
- Influence platform and data governance, security, and compliance practices
- Drive adoption of modern backend technologies, tooling, and workflows
- Improve reliability, performance, testing, incident response, operational excellence, developer experience, delivery speed, and quality
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience designing, building, and operating back-end or distributed systems in production environments
- Experience leading large-scale, highly available, and high-volume services or platforms, ideally in AWS, GCP, or Azure
- Experience providing technical leadership across teams or domains, including setting architectural direction, influencing roadmaps, and driving complex initiatives from concept to production
- Experience with scalable, secure, observable, and cost-efficient cloud-native systems
- Experience with high-throughput, low-latency APIs, data and event pipelines, and platform capabilities
- Experience with platform and data governance, security, and compliance practices
