Job Description

Principal Substation Engineer leading high-voltage substation design and project delivery. Supporting GFT’s power and utility engineering projects across the United States.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead or support utility and power substation projects and clients
  • Develop substation layout drawings, including plans, elevations, yard layouts, grounding, raceways, control building layouts, cable lists, and material lists
  • Develop substation one-lines, three-lines, auxiliary AC and DC power systems, DC schematics, SCADA and communications systems, relay panel layouts, equipment wiring, and cable schedules
  • Prepare calculations and reports and present calculations to clients
  • Prepare equipment specifications for substation equipment, components, and construction
  • Manage the technical, financial, and scheduling aspects of substation projects
  • Act as project manager, client manager, or capture/proposal manager as needed
  • Build and manage skills, resources, and expertise for strategic services, partnerships, programs, and projects
  • Collaborate internally to pursue regional and national power substation projects
  • Provide QA/QC reviews
  • Mentor or lead engineers and other technical specialists
  • Develop and nurture client relationships across multiple disciplines and offices
  • Prepare proposals, bids, reports, and presentations

Requirements:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer License
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in design, engineering, and project management within the power and utility industry
  • Interest in or direct experience working in the consulting engineering profession
  • Demonstrated ability with project management software and tools, such as Microsoft Project or similar, for scope, schedule, and budget management
  • Design experience in high-voltage substation and distribution projects
  • Experience creating quality technical solutions and delivering major power delivery projects
  • Commitment to driving strong business performance, continuous improvement, and best practices
  • Advanced Degree strongly preferred
  • Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or Inventor preferred
