Job Description

Senior claims representative managing complex commercial auto claims for Berkley Small Business Solutions. Handling coverage, investigations, reserves, settlements, vendors, and mentoring across jurisdictions.

Responsibilities:

  • Independently manage a complex portfolio of commercial auto claims, including high-exposure physical damage, property damage, total loss, fuel spills, medical payments, cargo damage, and multi-party liability claims
  • Exercise advanced judgment in coverage analysis, investigation strategy, and claims resolution
  • Ensure compliance with jurisdictional requirements
  • Lead proactive and timely communication with insureds, claimants, brokers, and internal partners
  • Serve as a primary escalation point for complex or sensitive customer issues
  • Oversee vendor performance, including appraisers, independent adjusters, and specialty experts
  • Perform advanced coverage evaluations using policy language, statutes, regulations, and case law
  • Communicate coverage positions and issue detailed coverage letters
  • Provide consultative support and informal coaching to junior adjusters
  • Ensure claim files contain complete, accurate, and timely documentation
  • Monitor and validate data quality and statutory reporting compliance
  • Establish and adjust loss and expense reserves on complex and potentially high-severity claims
  • Identify significant reserve changes and collaborate with leadership and actuarial teams
  • Lead comprehensive investigations involving insureds, witnesses, experts, authorities, and medical providers
  • Conduct or direct recorded statements, scene investigations, and technical evaluations
  • Evaluate and pursue subrogation, contribution, and recovery opportunities
  • Manage claim workflows and diary practices in accordance with company guidelines and regulatory timelines
  • Direct external vendors in damage evaluation, liability assessment, and exposure analysis
  • Oversee and resolve total loss claims, including valuation disputes, diminished value, salvage processes, and heavy equipment appraisals
  • Negotiate settlements on complex claims
  • Support continuous improvement and department initiatives
  • Perform other functions as assigned

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of commercial auto or casualty claims handling experience, preferably involving trucking, cargo, or multi-jurisdictional claims
  • Demonstrated expertise in coverage interpretation, liability assessment, and negotiation of complex claims
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills
  • Advanced organizational and analytical abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and claims management systems
  • Ability to mentor and support development of less experienced adjusters
  • Must obtain and maintain independent adjuster licenses in all required states, including AL, CT, GA, FL, ME, MS, NY, NC, SC, TN, and TX, within 90 days of hire
  • Completion of required licensing coursework, testing, and background checks
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible claims experience
  • Business-related travel as required, estimated at less than 5% of time
