Job Description
Senior Policy Advisor researching trade and climate policy impacts for IISD, a global sustainable development think tank. Advising governments and industry across Southeast Asia on competitiveness and carbon-adjustment measures.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct economic research on the competitiveness impacts of climate policy choices in Indonesia, Viet Nam, and the Philippines
- Work with industry and government to assess and respond to border carbon adjustment policies
- Engage industry and labour representatives on competitiveness impacts of climate policies domestically and abroad
- Develop trade and climate policy recommendations with partners
- Coordinate with IISD Energy and Fiscal Policy teams and project management, communications, and monitoring and evaluation teams
- Identify challenges, opportunities, and emerging issues related to trade and climate policy in Southeast Asia
- Establish and implement strategic partnerships with academia, international organizations, NGOs, and civil society
- Lead economic research projects and translate modelling outputs into non-technical language
- Produce reports, policy briefs, and technical guidance documents
- Present research and policy recommendations and respond to questions on complex topics
- Collaborate with communications professionals on messaging and media engagement, including social media
- Manage activities, outputs, research programs, risks, results measurement, and reporting
- Develop and maintain relationships with government and non-governmental partners
- Build a network of trade and climate policy contacts through professional forums, regional conferences, and industry and civil society associations
Requirements:
- A university degree or equivalent in economics, environmental economics, or a related subject
- Ability to analyze data and modelling results
- 4 to 7 years of professional experience in policy development and implementation
- Demonstrated knowledge of policy processes
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to explain complex topics in simple terms
- Knowledge of trade policy, including tariffs, non-tariff barriers, and related measures
- Experience collaborating with private industry representatives, particularly in steel, cement, aluminum, chemicals, or other heavy industrial sectors
- Knowledge of key trade policy issues facing heavy industrial sectors
- Ability to communicate effectively and build positive relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
- Frequent international travel
- Ability to work effectively in a remote, asynchronous team with minimal supervision
- Candidates must hold appropriate work authorization in the country where they are based, without IISD sponsorship
