Job Description

Senior Product Manager shaping evidence-led digital products for PLOS, a nonprofit open-access publisher. Leading discovery, experimentation and product decisions during a 12-month maternity cover.

Responsibilities:

  • Take responsibility for a product area
  • Build a deep understanding of users, their needs and behaviours, and the surrounding organisational, operational and technical context
  • Translate PLOS objectives into clear product outcomes and priorities
  • Work closely with design, engineering and other colleagues to explore problems and test ideas with users and through data
  • Frame hypotheses, design experiments and identify the smallest sensible way to learn
  • Make product decisions by weighing evidence, impact, effort, risk and opportunity
  • Define measures of success and use qualitative and quantitative evidence to assess impact
  • Help the team deliver iteratively, learn from results and adapt
  • Communicate problems, evidence, choices, trade-offs and learning clearly
  • Create feedback loops through conversations, demos and reviews
  • Enable designers, engineers and specialists to contribute to product decisions
  • Understand the wider service, including processes, systems and teams beyond the product interface

Requirements:

  • Degree-level qualification or equivalent professional experience
  • At least three years' experience working as a Product Manager in a multidisciplinary digital product team
  • Experience using product discovery alongside delivery, including user research, data, experimentation and hypothesis testing
  • Experience working with significant uncertainty or ambiguity
  • Experience turning complex problems into clear priorities, outcomes and practical next steps
  • Experience making product decisions using user evidence, data, organisational goals, technical constraints and product judgement
  • Experience communicating product thinking clearly to a wide range of people
  • Experience working collaboratively with people outside the immediate product team
  • Scholarly publishing experience is useful but not required
  • Occasional national or international travel may be required
