Job Description
Staff Engineer building reliable, explainable Pricing APIs for tem’s AI-native electricity transaction platform. Improving speed, correctness and service architecture for business energy contracts.
Responsibilities:
- Build and iterate the Pricing API behind RED, tem's modern utility product
- Ensure pricing systems are fast, correct, reliable and ready for third-party access
- Lead extraction of pricing logic into a dedicated service with clean boundaries
- Decide when the new pricing service is stable enough to cut over
- Design detection, alerting and explainability systems for bad or slow prices
- Improve pricing speed for every customer quote
- Raise engineering standards through design reviews, pairing and multi-agent workflows
- Handle live pricing incidents and turn lessons into structural roadmap fixes
- Price real energy contracts for businesses buying electricity and renewable generators selling it
Requirements:
- Deep production backend Python experience; designed and owned APIs at scale
- Led a significant decoupling or migration of a live system without breaking dependencies
- Strong FastAPI and SQL
- Experience with data- and analytics-heavy systems where numerical correctness has financial impact
- Ability to set technical direction across teams and negotiate service boundaries with neighbouring teams
- Experience designing multi-agent workflows using Claude or similar tools
- Product engineering judgement balancing speed, accuracy and explainability
- Desirable: domain knowledge from energy pricing, fintech or neo-utilities
- Desirable: experience building APIs consumed by external third parties
- Desirable: AWS and serverless patterns, including Lambda, event-driven services and Postgres on RDS
- Desirable: Polars or a track record of making numerical code fast
- Fluent English speaking, reading and writing
