Job Description
Staff Software Engineer advancing Canva's experimentation platform for backend teams. Building safer experiment targeting, rollout, measurement and AI-assisted analysis capabilities.
Responsibilities:
- Provide senior technical leadership across backend systems behind Canva's experimentation programme
- Evolve the platform used to set up experiments, target users, expose variants and measure outcomes
- Reinforce good experimentation practices, surface signals faster and alert early when things go wrong
- Explore automation of analysis using AI to help teams learn faster and iterate
- Own significant technical problems
- Work with senior leaders across Canva
- Shape the platform's future direction with platform-building teams
- Collaborate across Canva's engineering and data science organisations
- Support shared experimentation capabilities used by engineers, data scientists and product teams
Requirements:
- Experience building backend systems or platforms used by other engineers
- Experience with experimentation, A/B testing, feature-management or progressive-rollout systems in a large engineering environment
- Experience taking ambiguous engineering problems, forming technical direction and helping engineers move toward an outcome
- Experience building internal platforms or capabilities and driving adoption
- Strong software engineering fundamentals
- Experience designing reliable backend and distributed systems
- Ability to reason about scalability, availability, consistency and failure modes
- Familiarity with data engineering, analytics engineering or large-scale data processing
- Familiarity with experiment assignment, targeting, variants, feature flags, metrics, guardrails and progressive rollout
- Java is useful but not a hard requirement
- Direct experience with experimentation, A/B testing, feature-management or rollout infrastructure is a nice to have
- Background spanning software engineering and data science, data engineering or analytics engineering is a nice to have
- Experience with feature flagging, user targeting, progressive rollout or automated guardrail systems is a nice to have
- Comfort with experimentation and statistics is valuable
