Job Description
Staff Software Engineer leading backend experimentation infrastructure at Canva, the design platform. Improving A/B testing, feature rollout, measurement and AI-assisted analysis for product teams.
Responsibilities:
- Provide senior technical leadership across backend systems supporting Canva's experimentation programme
- Evolve the platform used to set up experiments, target users, expose variants and measure outcomes
- Improve experimentation practices, surface signals faster and alert early when guardrails are threatened
- Explore automation of experimentation analysis using AI
- Own significant technical problems
- Work with senior leaders across Canva to shape the platform's direction
- Collaborate with teams building the platform
- Build shared experimentation capabilities used across Canva
- Collaborate broadly with engineering and data science organisations and senior technical leaders
- Support engineers configuring and launching experiments, data scientists analyzing impact, and product teams deciding what to roll out, change or stop
Requirements:
- Experience building backend systems or platforms that other engineers depend on
- Experience with experimentation, A/B testing, feature-management or progressive-rollout systems in a large engineering environment
- Experience taking ambiguous engineering problems, forming technical direction and helping engineers move toward an outcome
- Experience building internal platforms or capabilities and driving adoption
- Strong software engineering fundamentals
- Experience designing reliable backend and distributed systems
- Ability to reason about scalability, availability, consistency and failure modes
- Familiarity with data engineering, analytics engineering or large-scale data processing
- Familiarity with experiment assignment, targeting, variants, feature flags, metrics, guardrails and progressive rollout
- Strong engineering fundamentals transferable between languages
- Direct experimentation, A/B testing, feature-management or rollout infrastructure experience is a nice to have
- Background spanning software engineering and data science, data engineering or analytics engineering is a nice to have
- Feature flagging, user targeting, progressive rollout or automated guardrail experience is a nice to have
- Statistical intuition and ability to work closely with data scientists is valuable
- Willingness to participate in interactive, real-time technical challenges and potentially use AI tools during interviews
