Job Description
Staff Software Engineer owning Canva's native mobile build, release, and monorepo infrastructure. Strengthening Bazel, CI/CD, React Native, iOS, and Android foundations for Canva's design platform.
Responsibilities:
- Own the roadmap for Bazel build rules, React Native bundling and codegen
- Make trade-offs between short-term fixes and long-term build foundations
- Mature Canva's mobile release and deployment tooling, including OTA and staged rollout
- Lead the staged migration of mobile repositories into Canva's monorepo
- Own build, test, and release continuity during the monorepo migration
- Set quality-gating strategy across the CI/CD pipeline
- Surface build reliability and speed problems proactively
- Evolve the React Native build pipeline as a shared web and mobile foundation
- Align Mobile Workflows, Cross Platform, Build Platform, and DevX stakeholders
- Build monitoring and health signals for builds and releases
- Mentor engineers and establish durable engineering standards
- Define technical direction for iOS and Android build systems, monorepo strategy, and React Native build pipelines
Requirements:
- Deep, hands-on expertise with Bazel, Gradle, or Xcode build systems at production scale
- Track record of scoping and delivering complex multi-team projects, such as migrations, monorepo consolidation, or build infrastructure at scale
- Strong native engineering background in iOS, Android, or both
- Experience owning CI/CD or release pipelines that other teams depend on
- Ability to balance short-term delivery against long-term architecture
- Ability to connect external tooling shifts to changes in technical direction
- Documentation and technical practices adopted as engineering references
- Bazel build rules, custom rule sets, and monorepo build configuration at meaningful scale
- CI/CD quality gates and pipeline stages
- React Native bundling, codegen, and native module integration
- Xcode build system and native iOS release configuration
- Gradle and native Android release configuration
- OTA updates, staged rollout, and mobile deployment infrastructure
- Experience migrating or operating within a large-scale monorepo
