Job Description
Synthetic/process chemist creating and evaluating dual-use chemistry prompts for Mercor’s frontier AI safety models. Writing reference answers and technical rationales distinguishing legitimate work from misuse.
Responsibilities:
- Write challenging single-turn prompts in chemistry and chemical safety, labeled as benign, dual-use, or adversarial
- Evaluate model responses against a defined policy standard
- Judge whether model responses handled technical requests correctly
- Write reference answers describing correct responses and the technical reasoning behind them
- Test frontier AI models' ability to assess the misuse potential of technical requests
- Apply practitioner expertise to distinguish routine process chemistry from potentially dangerous requests
- Provide written rationales for judgments that non-specialists can follow
- Read and write about misuse scenarios in chemistry for sustained periods
Requirements:
- Synthetic route design and development experience in pharmaceutical, agrochemical, or fine chemicals
- Process chemistry and reaction engineering experience, including optimisation, kinetics, and impurity control
- Experience scaling from bench to pilot to plant, including the associated safety review
- Experience with precursor sourcing, controlled-substance registration, or regulatory chemistry
- Method development and troubleshooting in a GMP or equivalent quality environment
- Ability to distinguish routine professional chemistry questions from requests involving misuse
- Strong writing skills and ability to provide rationales understandable to non-specialists
- Prior technical writing, published research, or expert witness experience is a strong signal; include a sample or link
- Must not use classified or export-controlled information, NDA-covered information, or information subject to prepublication review obligations
