Responsibilities:
- Administer and maintain production PostgreSQL databases on Amazon RDS and Aurora across development, staging and production environments
- Monitor and tune database performance using Performance Insights, pg_stat_statements and EXPLAIN ANALYZE, including indexing, vacuum and query optimisation
- Plan and execute major-version upgrades and configuration changes with minimal downtime using blue/green deployments and logical replication
- Own backup, restore and disaster recovery, including point-in-time recovery, cross-region snapshots and regular restore drills against agreed RTO and RPO targets
- Review schema migrations from application teams using Knex and TypeORM, enforcing zero-downtime change patterns such as concurrent index builds and expand/contract
- Manage database infrastructure as code using Terraform and Terragrunt through GitHub Actions pipelines
- Implement database security controls including least-privilege roles, encryption, credential rotation via AWS Secrets Manager and audit logging with pgAudit
- Manage connection pooling, high availability and failover using RDS Proxy or PgBouncer and Multi-AZ configurations
- Support data and BI teams with read replicas, replication and secure connectivity into Amazon Redshift and ELT tooling
- Define database alerting and runbooks, and participate in an on-call rotation to maintain 24/7 reliability
- Track and optimise database spend, including instance sizing, storage and IOPS selection and reserved capacity
- Collaborate with backend, DevOps and data teams to deliver reliable, well-modelled data services
Requirements:
- Deep experience administering PostgreSQL 14+ in production, including MVCC, vacuum tuning, WAL, replication and lock behaviour
- Strong hands-on knowledge of Amazon RDS and Aurora PostgreSQL, including parameter groups, Performance Insights, Enhanced Monitoring and blue/green deployments
- Proven backup and recovery experience, including real restore exercises and cross-region recovery
- Proficiency in Terraform and Git-based workflows for managing database infrastructure
- Solid scripting skills in Python, Bash or SQL for automation, health checks and reporting
- Strong understanding of schema design, query optimisation and indexing strategies for high-transaction workloads
- Working knowledge of Redis/ElastiCache and MongoDB administration
- Understanding of database security and compliance requirements (PCI DSS, GDPR) for customer and payment data
- Comfortable operating in a multi-account AWS environment with SSO and CI/CD-driven deployments
- Ability to write clear runbooks, post-mortems and change plans that other engineers can follow
- Background in iGaming, Sportsbook or Fintech platforms
- Experience with Amazon Redshift or another columnar data warehouse, and ELT tools such as Airbyte or AWS Glue
- Experience with PostgreSQL extensions and tooling such as pgAudit, pg_partman and pg_repack
- Experience with observability tooling (Grafana, OpenTelemetry, CloudWatch) in high-traffic environments
- Familiarity with Node.js ORMs and migration tooling (Knex, TypeORM, Prisma)
- Knowledge of event-driven architectures (Kafka, RabbitMQ) and change data capture (Debezium)
- AWS Certified Database Specialty or Solutions Architect certification
Benefits:
- A truly global remote environment working with teammates from all over the world
- Take up to 28 unavailable days a year plus public holidays
- Opportunity to build and scale a B2B platform from the ground up within a fresh tech ecosystem launched in 2025
