Job Description

Life Underwriting Auditor auditing medical and financial risk decisions for Manulife, an international financial services provider. Improving underwriting controls, governance, quality, and innovation.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct post-issue audits and monitoring of new underwriting initiatives
  • Assess technical accuracy, guideline adherence, and quality of underwriter decision-making
  • Review underwriting decisions for medical, financial, and operational soundness
  • Ensure decisions align with company guidelines, risk appetite, and mortality assumptions
  • Identify material errors, trends, and themes in audit results
  • Prepare structured reports and recommendations for management
  • Collaborate with Underwriting Management and Risk Management on Corrective Action Plans and remediation tracking
  • Enhance the Underwriting Risk Control Framework, including control design, key risk indicators, and governance standards
  • Translate audit findings into targeted training, coaching, and guideline clarifications with Training & Development
  • Test and evaluate new tools, rules engines, and GenAI solutions for their impact on underwriting quality and risk
  • Assist with targeted audits for Underwriting Innovation initiatives
  • Maintain complete and accurate audit documentation for internal audit, governance committees, and regulatory review
  • Refine audit frameworks, metrics, and reporting through continuous improvement

Requirements:

  • Several years, typically 5+ years, of experience in life insurance underwriting
  • Proven expertise in medical and financial underwriting
  • Strong understanding of life insurance products, underwriting guidelines, and risk selection principles
  • Ability to interpret complex medical and financial information and assess risk appropriately
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to identify patterns and root causes in audit findings
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to present findings clearly and constructively to underwriters and leadership
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and discretion when handling sensitive information
  • Preferred: experience in audit, quality assurance, or risk management within life underwriting
  • Preferred: familiarity with governance frameworks, risk controls, and regulatory expectations related to underwriting
  • Preferred: comfort working with Excel or BI tools to analyze audit results and trends
  • Preferred: professional designation such as ALU, FALU, FLMI, or equivalent
  • Technical underwriting expertise in medical and financial underwriting
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving
  • Objectivity and fairness in assessment and feedback
  • Collaboration with Underwriting, Risk, Training, Innovation, and Pricing teams
  • Organizational skills and ability to manage multiple audits and deadlines
