Job Description
Sr. Staff AI Engineer building responsible AI infrastructure for Capital One banking. Designing scalable foundation models, agentic workflows, and enterprise AI platforms.
Responsibilities:
- Partner with engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to deliver AI-powered products
- Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components, including foundation model training, LLM inference, agents and multi-agent workflows, similarity search, guardrails, model evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability
- Leverage open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Hugging Face, VectorDBs, and PyTorch
- Invent and introduce state-of-the-art foundation model optimization techniques to improve scalability, cost, latency, and throughput
- Contribute to the technical vision and long-term roadmap of foundational AI systems
- Define and steer technical AI architecture, integrating applied research into reliable, scalable production ecosystems
- Establish AI performance, safety, and transparency standards for company-wide model development and deployment
- Drive multi-year platform initiatives unifying data, compute, and model lifecycle management under an enterprise AI architecture
- Mentor senior technical leaders across research, data, and engineering disciplines
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field plus at least 10 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies; or Master's degree in a related field plus at least 8 years of such experience
- At least 10 years of programming experience with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java
- Preferred: Experience architecting AI platforms with cost, latency, throughput, and accuracy tradeoffs
- Preferred: 9+ years deploying scalable and responsible AI solutions on cloud platforms
- Preferred: Experience architecting, designing, developing, integrating, delivering, and supporting complex AI systems
- Preferred: Ability to lead and mentor multiple engineering teams and influence senior cross-functional stakeholders
- Preferred: Experience with AI/ML technologies including LLM inference, similarity search, VectorDBs, guardrails, and memory
- Preferred: Experience optimizing training and inference software for hardware utilization, latency, throughput, and cost
- Preferred: Experience building agentic AI systems and workflows
- Preferred: Experience with current AI research and applying novel techniques in production
- Preferred: Excellent communication and presentation skills for articulating complex AI concepts
- Preferred: Industry leadership in applied AI or machine learning infrastructure through patents, publications, or open-source leadership
- Preferred: Experience designing long-term AI infrastructure strategies balancing cost, scale, ethics, and regulatory compliance
- Preferred: Experience driving organization-wide AI safety, alignment, and governance standards
- Preferred: Ability to shape R&D investment strategy around breakthrough AI capabilities
- Preferred: Experience right-sizing models, instance counts, and hardware types
