Job Description

Underwriting Manager leading commercial umbrella insurance programs for Distinguished Programs, a national insurance program manager. Managing underwriters, portfolio profitability, compliance, pricing strategy and customer experience across U.S. programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage, mentor and coach Underwriters in technical and professional skills
  • Supervise underwriting operations and provide guidance to a team of Underwriters
  • Monitor and report on portfolio performance
  • Execute strategic pricing and growth models
  • Administer and ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, rating rules and insurance regulations
  • Work with Program Managers to strengthen and grow designated programs
  • Partner with Sales Executives and Program Managers to ensure communication and alignment
  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external customers
  • Create, coordinate and participate in underwriting training
  • Foster continuous improvement
  • Solve root-cause problems and provide resolution paths
  • Recommend and implement workflow, productivity, growth, profitability and quality improvements
  • Monitor, manage and report on Service Level Agreements to key stakeholders
  • Participate in and ensure quality control processes
  • Obtain and understand market intelligence and trends
  • Underwrite as needed, including risk selection, pricing and coverage assessment based on underwriting guidelines
  • Travel may be required on a limited basis

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 7+ years of commercial insurance underwriting experience
  • 3+ years with direct supervision and/or management of people
  • Advanced technical underwriting expertise and high-level insurance knowledge and underwriting practices
  • Data analytics to monitor product profitability, rate achievement and SLAs
  • Ability to set and meet goals by obtaining buy-in from management, peers and associates
  • Interpersonal skills to achieve desired goals and interact effectively
  • Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Highly detail-oriented
  • Superior organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously
  • Professional insurance designation(s) preferred
  • Insurance license per state requirements preferred
