Job Description

Analytics Engineer building governed warehouses, semantic layers, and reusable data assets for Common App. Enabling scalable analytics and college admissions research through reliable data infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

  • Evolve Common App’s shared data warehouse, semantic layer, and reusable data assets.
  • Enable scalable analytics, data governance, and artificial intelligence readiness across the organization.
  • Operationalize governance standards within enterprise systems.
  • Build shared data foundations for the Applied Analytics and Research team.
  • Develop the reporting schema.
  • Refactor existing tables and pipelines for performance, cost efficiency, and maintainability.
  • Design and implement automated data quality frameworks.
  • Establish monitoring and alerting for critical datasets and pipelines.
  • Maintain warehouse data documentation.
  • Architect scalable, high-quality data products that support self-service analytics.
  • Partner with Data Engineering, Applied Analytics and Research, and Data Governance.
  • Deliver insight-ready data and ensure governance rules are technically enforceable.
  • Contribute to long-term platform planning and organizational data strategies.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must live in the United States.
  • Willing to travel to attend twice annual Common App Retreat.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, Statistics, or a closely related quantitative or technical field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5-8 years of progressive experience in analytics engineering, data engineering, or a closely related data platform role.
  • Experience in enterprise data warehouse environments at scale, including ownership of data models, transformation pipelines, and data quality processes.
  • Experience implementing data governance requirements such as retention, deletion, or PII controls within a production data platform.
  • Strong SQL and data modeling expertise, including dimensional modeling, star/snowflake schemas, and modern data transformation approaches.
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines and transformation layers within cloud data warehouse platforms such as Databricks, Snowflake, or BigQuery.
  • Experience with Databricks features including Unity Catalog, Delta Live Tables, or Databricks workflows.
  • Experience designing and maintaining a semantic or metrics layer for BI tools, analysts, and AI systems.
  • Thought leadership and innovation in data platform engineering or analytics engineering practices.
  • Ability to contribute to long-term platform planning and influence organizational data strategies.
  • Experience implementing automated data quality frameworks with pipeline-embedded tests, validation logic, and monitoring/alerting.
  • Understanding of data governance concepts and ability to translate retention, PII handling, and access-control requirements into technical implementations.
  • Proficiency in Python for data engineering and analytics workloads.
  • Familiarity with orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow, dbt Cloud, or Databricks AI/BI.
  • Experience designing and implementing reusable data products and assets for self-service analytics.
  • Strong documentation practices, including data dictionaries, lineage records, and model descriptions.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, collaboration, and influencing skills.
  • Proficiency with GitHub and Git.
  • Advanced Tableau training and experience, data catalog/metadata management tools, Agile frameworks, higher education/nonprofit/mission-driven technology, and relevant data engineering or cloud platform certifications are ideal-candidate qualifications.
