Job Description

Applied AI Engineer building agentic-system infrastructure for MAI, a German digital agency group. Designing orchestration, retrieval, evaluation, and scalable production services.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for the architecture of agentic systems and building the agent harness with orchestration, tool interfaces, sandboxing, permission model, state and memory management, subagents, and execution/tracing
  • Development of loop engineering and context management including abort-and-handover logic, budgets, context compression, and cross-session memory
  • Development of scalable services in Python and TypeScript with APIs, asynchronous processing, queues, backpressure, rate limits, idempotence, and tenant isolation
  • Building the data and retrieval layer from ingestion and normalization to vector and full-text indexes
  • Measuring and improving retrieval quality
  • Conducting evaluations on trajectories, regression testing for prompts and tools, and implementing guardrails
  • Operating the systems with containerization, CI/CD and monitoring, as well as controlling latency and model costs
  • Working with coding agents, evaluating models and frameworks, and co-deciding on the technology stack and on-premise deployment
  • Collaborating in a small team directly with the Head of AI

Requirements:

  • Several years of backend or platform engineering experience
  • Proven experience running agentic systems in production, not just proofs of concept
  • Experience with tool-calling, tool design, MCP, planning and reflection patterns, and multi-agent setups with subagents
  • Experience designing execution loops, context compression, and cross-session state management
  • Clean, testable Python and TypeScript code
  • Experience in API development with FastAPI or Node
  • Daily work with coding agents
  • Experience with systems under load, concurrency, queues, rate limits and distributed state
  • Experience with Docker, CI/CD and deployments on AWS, Azure, GCP or on-premises servers
  • Kubernetes and local GPU environments are a plus
  • Experience with ETL and ELT pipelines, vector databases, evaluations, tracing and observability
  • Awareness of latency and token cost considerations
  • Ability to design GDPR-compliant architectures, including tenant isolation, secrets handling, rights for agent tools, and cloud/on-premise delineation
  • Excellent German skills at C2 level
  • Fluent English skills

Benefits:

  • Significant scope for influence and flat hierarchies
