Job Description
Director of Safety & Security at Working Families Party facing threats to progressive organizations. Leading processes to enhance organizational safety and ensuring digital and physical infrastructure protection.
Responsibilities:
- Leads the implementation of a variety of recently developed Security SOPs and checklists.
- Develop new processes to ensure digital security.
- As needed, conduct organizational risk assessments and ensure incident response systems are clear, up-to-date, and actionable.
- Coordinate response strategies for digital threats, doxing, surveillance, harassment, or state repression.
- Collaborate to ensure safe in-person events, staff gatherings, field operations, travel, and community engagements.
- Monitor emerging trends in threats to progressive and movement organizations; translate insights into actionable recommendations.
- Manage the annual security budget, track expenses, and identify needs for contracting additional security experts.
- May serve as WFP’s representative in coalitions, networks, and coordination spaces related to organizational defense and progressive security.
- Convene and facilitate the Security Working Group to develop, maintain, implement, and sustain security policies and culture.
- Finalize goals and manage project plans to advance organization-wide security practices through practical and relational change management.
- Provide immediate support during incidents or escalated concerns in coordination with the Working Group.
- Prepare reports and briefings for staff and boards on security conditions, incidents, and movement-wide threats.
- Ensure robust security practices for in-person staff gatherings and organizational events.
- Oversee processes for individual staff safety, including home safety audits, digital audits, and tailored security plans.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for staff questions about security practices, protocols, and risk response.
- Support board members in security practices related to their organizational roles.
- Implement remote workplace digital security protocols and best practices.
- Coordinate rapidly with IT and consultant partners to mitigate digital attacks or vulnerabilities.
- Stay current on trends in digital security, remote work risks, and protective technologies.
- Facilitate or coordinate trainings on safety, de-escalation, transformative justice, incident response, and digital security.
- Develop and/or adapt curriculum to meet organizational needs and support cross-departmental learning.
- Build and deepen relationships with priority movement organizations, leaders, and progressive security practitioners.
- Identify opportunities for shared learning, collaboration, and resource development across the broader progressive ecosystem.
Requirements:
- At least **5 years of experience** in organizational operations, security, community safety, or comparable work within progressive, political settings.
- Minimum **3 years of experience** stewarding partnerships or participating in coalitions in the progressive or broader movement ecosystem.
- Some experience delivering effective trainings for diverse learners.
- Supervision experience or demonstrated ability to guide and train managers and director-level staff.
- Experience providing rapid response support to individuals or organizations experiencing security, harassment, or violence-related crises.
- Strong background in digital security, data privacy, and remote workplace technology.
- Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to racial justice, LGBTQ liberation, and gender justice.
- Experience handling highly sensitive and confidential information with utmost discretion.
- Understanding of security culture and strategies for risk mitigation.
- Ability to act courageously and compassionately when delivering difficult information or making rapid decisions.
- Exceptional project management skills with experience leading mixed teams of staff and consultants.
- Strong verbal, written, relational, and cross-departmental communication skills.
- High level of professionalism, emotional intelligence, and proactive communication.
- Strong time management, prioritization, and follow-through skills in complex environments.
