Job Description

Educational Advisor guiding Johns Hopkins CTY high school scholars through academic planning, college admissions, testing, and scholarships. Managing individualized advising and mentorship for a nationwide virtual program.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide individualized academic and college advising to CTY Scholars students in grades 9–12
  • Establish mentoring relationships and provide guidance, encouragement, accountability, and support
  • Communicate with students through virtual meetings, email, text messaging, and approved communication methods
  • Monitor student engagement and follow up on missed meetings or unanswered outreach
  • Document meetings, progress updates, and action plans while maintaining student confidentiality
  • Monitor academic progress and review report cards, transcripts, and academic records
  • Identify academic challenges and implement interventions, improvement strategies, goal setting, study plans, and time management strategies
  • Advise on course selection and rigorous academic opportunities
  • Guide college exploration, college list development, application planning, essay preparation, scholarship research, financial aid, appeals, and summer bridge programs
  • Assist with competitive applications and write recommendation letters
  • Track college applications, admissions outcomes, and enrollment decisions
  • Support extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities, internships, academic enrichment, resumes, summer programs, and scholarships
  • Participate in planning and execution of the annual Leadership Conference
  • Counsel students on PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP, and IB testing timelines and preparation
  • Monitor CTY-supported test preparation and communicate with tutoring providers and CTY staff
  • Collaborate with CTY staff and external partners while managing an assigned caseload
  • Serve on the committee for selecting new cohorts as assigned

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Three years experience in counseling, education and other relevant academic administrative functions
  • Additional education may substitute for experience under the JHU equivalency formula
  • Experience advising, mentoring, counseling, or supporting high school students
  • Experience supporting students through academic planning, goal setting, or college/career preparation
  • Demonstrated ability to build meaningful relationships with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate records, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a team
  • Ability to use a personal computer and text messaging
  • Ability to manage a student caseload and maintain timely documentation
  • Evening or weekend availability
  • Some travel for program-related events or student engagement activities
  • Successful candidates are subject to a pre-employment background check
