Job Description

Financial Counselor supporting Ochsner Health, a Gulf South nonprofit healthcare provider, with patient billing, coverage, authorizations, and payment assistance. Resolving account issues and delivering accurate financial guidance across patient communication channels.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients with billing inquiries across the organization through face-to-face, email, fax, mail, and phone interactions
  • Review patient bills and collect liability for upcoming procedures, residual balances, and past-due balances
  • Review alternate benefit coverage options for medical and pharmaceutical services
  • Secure authorizations and establish fee arrangements
  • Provide coverage at other locations as needed
  • Serve as liaison between patients, providers, external departments, and responsible parties
  • Ensure charges are applied appropriately, transactions maintained, and account balances or discrepancies resolved
  • Provide timely estimates for upcoming procedures
  • Explain patients’ financial responsibilities and educate them on available assistance options
  • Deliver accurate, professional service and resolve patient issues efficiently
  • Remain compliant with applicable laws, accreditation standards, regulations, privacy, safety, and conduct requirements

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • At least 1 year of customer service, healthcare, or office experience required
  • Previous healthcare billing, collections, or customer service experience preferred
  • Computer skills and dexterity for patient-information data entry and retrieval
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Windows-style applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Proficiency with role-specific software packages and keyboard
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to multitask
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Ability to remain calm and professional during high-pressure patient financial and medical conversations
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and make independent decisions
  • Reliable transportation may be required for travel to other facilities
