Job Description
Inpatient coding specialist assigning ICD-10 codes and DRGs for Stanford Health Care. Reviewing records, abstracting data, and supporting compliant hospital reimbursement.
Responsibilities:
- Review inpatient medical record documentation and assign accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS diagnosis and procedure codes
- Assign MS-DRG or APR-DRG groupings, POA indicators, discharge disposition, and sources of admission
- Abstract required data elements according to facility specifications
- Monitor Discharged Not Billed accounts and support timely, compliant revenue-cycle processing
- Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Specialists and medical staff to clarify and complete documentation
- Ensure coding accuracy and established quality and productivity standards
- Analyze information for appropriate reimbursement and clean claims
- Apply CMS requirements, CCI edits, HACs, PSIs, NCDs, LCDs, and appropriate modifiers
- Use Epic, 3M Coding and Reimbursement System, 3M CDIS, 3M Audit Expert, MS Office, and other software
- Attend required meetings, educational sessions, and annual learning programs
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience
- Successful completion of the Coder Proficiency Exam (pre-hire)
- RHIA, RHIT, or CCS certification
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT-4 coding conventions
- Knowledge of MS-DRGs and APR-DRGs
- Knowledge of CCI and CMS compliance issues
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diseases, and medical-record regulations
- Ability to abstract information from medical records and assign accurate codes
- Ability to use 3M encoder, 3M Audit Expert, 3M CDIS, abstracting systems, MS Office, and related software
- Ability to comply with AHIMA Code of Ethics and Standards and UHDDS standards
- Successful completion of required pre-hire coder proficiency examination
