Job Description
Substation designer creating high- and extra-high-voltage electrical layouts for Sargent & Lundy. Preparing drawings, reviewing vendor designs, and leading field walkdowns.
Responsibilities:
- Work in a project team environment with engineers and other designers on high- and extra-high-voltage substation design
- Prepare and perform detailed reviews of substation general arrangements, electrical equipment plans, section views/elevations, bills of material, lightning stroke shielding plans, grounding plans, conduit/raceway plans, and control-building plans and sections
- Technically review project-team comments on vendor design deliverables, coordinate comment incorporation, and consolidate and resolve comments
- Lead field walkdowns, gather data at client facilities, interface with clients and contractors, and perform constructability walkdowns
- Identify applicable codes and standards, guide their application, and ensure designs conform to codes, client standards, and established practices
- Participate in enhancing company quality standards and processes
- Guide and mentor designers, drafters, and project stakeholders in design and drafting tools
- Review and supervise production of design deliverables
- Provide technical guidance on calculations, obtain required inputs, and independently prepare and review calculations
- Develop cost-effective design approaches
- Coordinate with other disciplines to obtain design inputs and support integrated design
- Implement work plans within budget and schedule and guide the project team toward targets
- Delegate and monitor assigned staff's technical work
- Provide performance feedback and oversee routine performance and personnel issues for assigned staff
Requirements:
- An Associates Degree in Drafting or equivalent technical experience
- 15 or more years of substation physical design experience
- Advanced knowledge of computer drafting tools (i.e. AutoCAD and/or MicroStation)
- Ability to visualize Equipment Details, Phase to Ground and Phase to Phase Clearances
- Ability to multi-task from project to project
- Ability to visualize parts in 3D without the aid of a computer
- Familiarity with Bentley Substation, Inventor SDS, and BlueBeam
- Familiar with ground-based Lidar, converting point cloud information to vector
- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models
- Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology, including the ability to relate various equipment to a technical design
- Candidates must be a citizen of a country listed in Appendix A to Part 810 of the Code of Federal Regulations due to possible access to U.S. export-controlled information
