Job Description
Leading research and production ML systems for A1’s proactive smart assistant. Defining reasoning, evaluation, safety, and orchestration for reliable everyday task completion.
Responsibilities:
- Own the research and intelligence direction of A1’s AI assistant system
- Set and evolve research direction across context representation, memory, reasoning, planning, and orchestration
- Decide whether to develop new model architectures or adapt frontier open-source and commercial models
- Define evaluation frameworks for real-world usefulness, robustness, safety, and long-term behavior
- Own alignment, safety, and guardrail strategy
- Guide exploration of retrieval-augmented training, mixture-of-experts, distillation, multi-agent orchestration, and multimodal systems
- Shape early product intelligence direction with product and application engineering
- Set the technical bar for research rigor, judgment, and taste across the organization
Requirements:
- Deep experience building or evolving real machine learning systems used in production
- Strong technical judgment around model behavior, failure modes, and long-horizon trade-offs
- Builder’s mindset focused on real-world systems
- Comfortable making irreversible or high-impact decisions with incomplete information
- Obsession with evaluation, correctness, and long-term system behavior
- High ownership mentality, operating as a founder rather than a manager
- Proficiency with Python
- Experience with PyTorch and/or JAX
- Experience with GPU-based training and inference systems
- Professional/fluent English proficiency for technical communication, documentation, and collaboration
