Job Description

Backend Engineer building secure Ruby and GraphQL repository management systems for GitLab’s DevSecOps platform. Improving reliability, performance, observability, and AI-powered configuration features.

Responsibilities:

Develop secure, well-tested, performant features and improvements using Ruby and GraphQL
Work through complex requirements and legacy constraints while protecting system reliability
Contribute to backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic for repository management
Collaborate asynchronously and synchronously across functions and teams
Use AI agents for well-scoped work and critically review their output
Write maintainable code according to GitLab standards and apply code-review feedback
Monitor production health metrics and participate in Tier 2 on-call
Troubleshoot incidents, contribute to root-cause analysis, and improve observability and resiliency
Share knowledge through code reviews, technical documentation, and collaboration

Requirements:

Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or APIs
Experience using Ruby and GraphQL, or ability to learn them
Understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance practices
Experience contributing to policy, permissions, or rules-based web application features
Experience writing backend unit and integration tests
Familiarity with Git and collaborative code review processes
Experience using AI coding tools or agents and reviewing their output
Clear written and spoken English communication skills
Ability to manage priorities, work through ambiguity, take ownership, and seek guidance
Must work effectively in a remote, asynchronous environment
