Job Description

Inpatient coding coordinator reviewing medical records, validating diagnoses, and ensuring accurate DRG reimbursement at ChristianaCare. Training coders and educating providers on clinical documentation improvement.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform timely prebill review and audit patient medical records, primarily inpatient.
  • Correctly capture the final DRG for each review.
  • Analyze inpatient clinical data, current treatment, and past medical history to identify physician documentation gaps.
  • Analyze and report trends and coding/documentation improvement opportunities.
  • Verify coding and abstracting accuracy through quantitative and qualitative reviews.
  • Communicate with physicians and providers to validate diagnoses and clinical indicators and prompt for documentation using AHIMA/ACDIS best-practice query principles when necessary.
  • Follow coding standards in accordance with CMS, AHIMA, AHA, AAPC, and AMA guidelines.
  • Create educational materials and educate physicians, coders, and healthcare providers on clinical documentation improvement and accurate, complete health-record documentation.
  • Train and audit entry-level coders and coders being trained in a new discipline.
  • Coordinate daily responsibilities of coding and support staff.

Requirements:

  • RHIA, RHIT or CCS certification or equivalent certification/degree.
  • College credits in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Three years coding experience in a Health Information Management Department or equivalent.
  • Experience with implementing and maintaining computer systems.
  • Knowledge of CMS, AHIMA, AHA, AAPC, and AMA coding guidelines and best practices.
