Job Description
Engineering Manager owning Nexcess Network Solutions architecture, roadmap, and delivery. Leading AI-assisted engineering for cloud networking, load balancing, firewalls, VPN, and VPC products.
Responsibilities:
- Own architecture design, delivery, and roadmap for one engineering team
- Build the Product partnership, shape the roadmap, commit to it, and deliver it
- Own engineering outcomes for Network Solutions' physical and virtual networking product space, including load balancing, switching, firewalls, VPN, and VPC
- Build deep understanding of customers, architecture, dependencies, integrations, and operational risks
- Ensure long-term health and evolution of owned products
- Write specifications, review pull requests, and ship real changes
- Run and promote daily use of the AI harness, agentic tooling, specification-first working, automated pull-request review, and reusable skills
- Scope and estimate roadmap work, identify unknowns, run a monthly cycle with an explicit cut line, and report status honestly
- Clear cross-team engineering dependencies before they block delivery
- Improve engineering performance toward DORA High and beyond by addressing review latency, build time, environments, handoffs, and approval loops
- Require tests with every change, coverage gating on changed code, and evidence in pull requests
- Make release go/no-go decisions based on evidence
- Hold one-to-ones, maintain growth plans, and provide direct feedback
- Own hiring end to end and maintain hiring standards
- Participate in the on-call rotation
- Ensure incidents are documented with actions closed on schedule, toil is removed, and no single point of failure remains
Requirements:
- 7+ years in software engineering, including at least one year leading engineers formally or informally
- Hands-on technical fluency in Perl, PHP, React, and Vue
- Experience with relational databases, including Postgres and MariaDB
- Experience with firewall and load balancer configuration
- Experience with VPN, HAProxy, nginx, switching and VLANs, and configuration management
- Currently hands-on and able to read diffs and review pull requests of AI-generated code
- Real, hands-on AI-assisted engineering with quantifiable impact
- Evidence of making a team measurably faster
- Knowledge of DORA numbers or an equivalent, including identifying bottlenecks and improving them
- Experience delivering and modernizing software to committed dates, including collaborative scoping and data-driven forecasting
- Experience operating a production on-call rotation
- Experience owning hiring end to end and holding a hiring bar
- Experience leading engineers across time zones
- Experience in managed hosting, cloud, or another high-availability service business is required
- Ability to work in a traditional climate controlled office environment or from home
- Ability to work at a desk and computer screen for extended periods
- Ability to work in a highly stressful environment with varied challenges and deadlines
