Job Description
Frontend developer building KoboToolbox’s TypeScript and React survey applications. Improving a global data-collection platform used by humanitarian organizations and thousands of partners.
Responsibilities:
- Search and read an extensive, long-lived code base to understand existing behavior and conventions.
- Identify outdated conventions and suggest improvements aligned with contemporary best practices.
- Write robust, concise, reusable code with tests and documentation.
- Review other developers’ code and provide constructive feedback.
- Incorporate code review feedback to improve skills and align with team standards.
- Use AI-assisted development tools while maintaining code quality and correctness.
- Investigate support-team bug reports and create well-scoped fixes or actionable resolution plans.
- Scope, prioritize, estimate, and organize work into manageable tasks.
- Attend regular video-conference check-ins with the technical team.
- Communicate with the public alongside support staff or through forums and issue trackers.
- Contribute collaboratively to design and architecture discussions.
- Perform other related duties as directed by the lead developer.
Requirements:
- Professional experience writing, deploying, and maintaining client-side code for real-world, API-driven single-page applications.
- Proficiency with TypeScript, React, styling, state management, and efficient data exchange over HTTP.
- Ability to work with legacy technologies such as Backbone and CoffeeScript.
- Recent experience giving and receiving code reviews.
- Ability to independently set up and troubleshoot a local development environment.
- Interest in data collection (surveying), particularly in humanitarian emergencies and other challenging contexts.
- Proficiency with spoken and written English.
- Fluency with Git.
- Overlap with working hours in the Eastern time zone.
- Average availability of at least 30 hours per week, preferably 35 hours or more.
- Preferred but not required: Docker and Docker Compose; Python, ideally Django and Django REST Framework; user-facing LLM integrations; XLSForm, ODK XForm, and OpenRosa; Stripe payment integrations.
- Only candidates with experience working on large web applications will be considered.
