Job Description
Lead backend engineer architecting scalable APIs and distributed systems for DraftKings’ real-time gaming platform. Mentoring engineers and driving technical direction.
Responsibilities:
- Architect, develop, and maintain scalable and secure systems and APIs for high-impact real-time applications
- Own the full development lifecycle, from architecture through workstream breakdown and implementation guidance
- Write high-performance, well-tested code meeting reliability and scalability standards
- Establish and enforce best practices for code quality, design patterns, testing, and system performance
- Triage, debug, and resolve complex production issues
- Collaborate with Product, Design, and Engineering to align technical solutions with business goals
- Mentor and coach engineers through guidance and feedback
- Shape the team roadmap and technical direction while fostering ownership and continuous learning
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or any suitable combination of education, experience, and training
- At least 5 years of experience in object-oriented backend development using languages such as C#
- Advanced expertise in OOP principles, design patterns, and backend architecture
- Ability to architect, build, and scale distributed systems in cloud environments such as AWS or Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
- Experience developing and maintaining automated unit, integration, and performance test suites
- Track record of mentoring engineers, leading code and design reviews, and driving technical decisions across cross-functional teams
- Experience building high-performance, scalable distributed applications and microservices
- Expertise in event streaming and non-relational databases such as MongoDB
- Working knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, and observability tools such as Datadog
- Understanding of the full Software Development Life Cycle
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
- May be required to obtain a gaming license issued by the appropriate state agency as a condition of employment
